Easy Composting!

Composting is a great way to decrease waste and make excellent fertilizer for your plants!

These are some important points to keep in mind when it comes to composting:

  • You CAN add fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea, grass and plant clippings, flowers, eggshells (I prefer to wash them first), paper bags and leaves.
  • Never add bones, meat, poultry, meat, fish, dairy products, grease or foods containing fats or oils to your compost pile, these items take longer to decompose, smell really bad as they are decomposing and  will attract critters raccoons and rats.
  • Other things to avoid are glossy paper, large pieces of plants that might take longer to decompose like tree branches, weeds and any kind of animal droppings.
  • Used an airtight container for your kitchen counter compost container.  Once you fill it up you can take it to your compost bin outside.
  • Your compose bin should not get too much sun and should get some air.
  • Choose an area away from your house.  Compost creates and attracts bugs, this is a good thing and they only help with the decomposing process, but be aware of these when choosing a location.
  • Checkin how wet and/or dry your compost is can be important, I honestly don’t do it much, but if you see that your compost is too wet add some paper (not the glossy type), paper bags or dry leaves.  If your compose is too dry then add some wet things like coffee grinds, fruits and vegetables scraps.
  • You do not need a special bin! A black garbage can with a lid and some holes on the side is sufficient, but if you want to get some of those fancy containers go ahead.
  •  Don’t sweat it! Composting is easy and once you start using compost on your plants you will be amaze of the results!

Above  is a very simple video explaining how we compost. Hope you like it and most of all, I hope it inspires you to compost!
